Animal News Northwest wins top journalism honors

June 23, 2016

Animal News Northwest was honored with three first place awards and a second place award during the Northwest Excellence in Journalism gala on Saturday night sponsored by Society of Professional Journalists Western Washington Pro Chapter. News publications across our region of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington were represented.

In the Visuals category photojournalist and ANN publisher Karen Ducey won first place in portrait photography for her picture of “Katie and Molly” and another first place award in the social issues single image category for “Down on Luck” a photograph of a homeless street youth and her three legged dog, Boxer.  Both of these images were part of the “You Are My Home” photo essay about homeless and low-income people and their pets in King County, a project partly funded by 4Culture.

In addition Ducey won a first place writing award in the daily print and online small publication category for short feature story for her article Rescue Pony Auctioned for a Pretty Penny and a second place award in government and politics reporting for Animal Rescue Taxed on Pet Adoptions.

Animal News Northwest dedicates its coverage to reporting on important animal issues in our area, often left of the mainstream press. We are honored to be recognized among such a high caliber of northwest news organizations.
